MINTP Officials Examine Problems Plaguing Road Infrastructure

Posté le : Aug 27, 2013, Par : Hannah - Dans : en-Echo des régions

On the 12 of August 2013, a meeting held at the conference hall of the Ministry of Public Works, chaired by the Secretary of State Mr. Hans Nyetam Nyetam. He shook hands upon arrival at the conference hall with participants who are concern with the construction of road, such as MATGENIE, SOMAF, SOGEA-SATOM and others, to discuss the problems and modality of the road constructions and infrastructure.

Speaking in the meeting, the Secretary of State mentioned the absence of other Directors, reasons being that they are out on the field for the Parliamentary and Municipal election coming up on 30 September 2013. He categorically spelt out his heartfelt disappointment in the domain of road constructions and structures, he questioned why some of the constructed roads collapse after a very short period. He stated that the overall national road network of Cameroon should be about 100.000km, from his observation 500km of roads which are very bad, eventually need to be rehabilitated. He urged them to glance through the speech of the Minister of Public Works, published in the Genie Civil Magazine, where the Minister stated that 95.000km of earth roads are likely to remain in their present state for many years, but today about 33.000 billion francs is indeed to pave all of them, meaning an average of 350 million per km for construction alone, by so doing we have to make this confidence concrete.

The Director of the Department of Rural Road (DRR) Mr. Tchoumi Jean Lambert, responded to the question by explaining that, some roads do not last for long because they have not been constructed by competent engineers who respect the norms and standards given to them by their experts or supervisors. He suggested that they should make a plan whereby supervisors and controllers frequently visit the construction site to bring back current innovation and evolution of work done.

On the part of MATGENIE they assured the participants from MINTP that they have a lot of machines of different categories fit for any construction work and which can last even for the next 15 years.

Concerning the issues of incompetent contractor being awarded huge contractor, the Secretary of State urges them to write complain and forward it to the Prime Minister.
